DPF Cleaning Questions Answered
Understand DPF warnings, service choices and what to prepare for a mobile visit. Advice depends on your vehicle; always follow its handbook.
A diesel particulate filter, or DPF, traps soot from diesel exhaust. The vehicle periodically removes accumulated soot through regeneration. The filter is part of the emissions system, so a warning should be investigated rather than simply cleared.
Regeneration uses heat to burn accumulated soot. Professional cleaning is a separate treatment considered when regeneration alone is unsuitable or insufficient. The right approach depends on fault codes, readings and the physical condition of the filter.
Repeated short trips can interrupt the operating conditions needed for regeneration. This does not mean every warning is caused by driving habits: sensor faults and other vehicle problems can also need investigation. Follow the instructions for your particular vehicle.
Have the registration, mileage, warning message and service history ready. Mention any loss of power, previous regeneration attempts or recent repairs. Existing garage reports help explain what has already been checked.
Check the vehicle handbook for the exact warning shown. If there is a red warning, severe loss of power or any concern that driving is unsafe, stop somewhere safe and seek appropriate assistance. Do not attempt a forced regeneration yourself or rely on a universal driving-speed recommendation.
Removing a DPF can make a road vehicle fail its MOT and breach emissions requirements. Investigate repair, suitable cleaning or replacement instead. Read the UK government’s DPF guidance.
Our listed packages start at £90 for Level 1, £199 for Level 2 and £259 for Level 3. Each includes different work. Vehicle condition, service suitability and any additional repairs must be confirmed before an agreed quotation is given. Compare our DPF services.
No treatment can guarantee that a warning will never return. Cleaning does not repair every underlying fault. Keep maintenance up to date, follow the correct oil specification and have repeated warnings investigated.
A suitable home or workplace location may be possible within our listed service areas. The technician needs safe access and permission to work where the vehicle is parked. Roadside work depends on the location; a mobile appointment is not an emergency recovery service.
